n. ~ PaaST (PreservationAction) · An action that implements one or more PaaST requirements and either directly impacts or verifies the preservation of one or more preservation targets.
A preservation action may consist of a single step or multiple steps.

- PaaST (1.0) 2017 (†860 p. 16): A PreservationAction impacts or involves at least one PreservationTarget. An impact is a change of state of a PreservationTarget or one or more of its parts. Actions that produce state changes include initiation, alteration, and deletion. Initiation is either creation, such as when a data file is created by migration from an earlier format, or introduction, which happens when an existing object is submitted to a Preservation Environment. A PreservationAction involves a PreservationTarget as input. (†2533)
- PaaST (1.0) 2017 (†860 p. 17): A PreservationAction generates at least one piece of PreservationManagementInformation that documents that the action was taken and describes the result. In addition, if any problem occurs in carrying out a PreservationAction, data about the problem and what is done to address it should be captured. If a PreservationAction results in a new or altered PreservationTarget, data describing the result would also be produced. (†2534)
